Short-path vacuum distillation is a distillation technique in which the distillate travels a short distance. It separates the mixture based on their difference in volatility in the liquid mixture boiling under reduced pressure. When the sample mixture is heated, its vapor rises a short distance into the vertical condenser where they are cooled by the coolant. The use of vacuum ensures that the atmospheric pressure within the system is eliminated, making it easier to complete the experiment in less time.
The advantage is that the heating temperature can be much lower (under reduced pressure) than the boiling point of the liquid at standard pressure, and the distillate only needs to travel a short distance before condensation. This technique is used for compounds that are unstable at high temperatures because it allows the use of lower boiling temperatures. The short path ensures that very few compounds are lost on the side of the device.
